Last year, a customer contacted me about creating a t-shirt quilt for her husband. We hit it off right away and came up with a fantastic design idea over the phone. Later, when I met with the customer at her home, I couldn’t help but notice all the giraffes decorating her house.

After inquiring, I learned that her husband worked in Africa and was bringing the giraffes back from his long trips. As a result, we changed our approach to the t-shirt quilt design and decided to incorporate a standing giraffe. In addition, I used appliqué and highlighting to enhance the t-shirts.

If you have t-shirts that you would like to preserve in a unique way, consider a t-shirt quilt. Moonlight Quilts works with customers to create a custom design and turn those keepsakes into a lasting memory.

A simple how-to video and written directions for making the y-seam. A good quilting tip for a lot of quilters.

In addition to making custom quilts and t-shirt quilts, I also teach a few quilting classes here and there. Based on that experience, I can say that many quilters have difficulty with making the y-seam. I’ve created a short video showing me completing a y-seam, and I’ve also written a short tutorial (download the y-seam tutorial pdf).

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

If you feel intimidated by the Y-seam, I hope this helps!

Free quilt pattern for commemorating St. Patrick's day. Includes a photo, notes, and assembly instructions in the attached pdf.

Download the free St. Patrick’s quilt pattern (pdf file).

To all you quilters out there, Happy St. Patrick’s Day! The last time I posted one of my quilt patterns for free, I had a video to go along with it. Lately things have been so busy that I don’t really have time to make a video for this pattern, but here’s a picture of the finished product:

Here’s what you’ll need:

3/4 yard for background

1 1/2 yard for backing

1/4 yard for orange

At least a 1/4 yard for binding (more if you choose a 2.5″ binding)

1/3 yard for the border

1/8 yard medium green (about a piglet)

Craft size batting

Thread to blend with top quilt

If you take a close look at the picture of the completed quilt, you’ll see there is some embroidery. That’s a touch you can add or leave out – it’s up to you. I chose to embroider Love, Faith, and Luck, because that’s what St. Patrick’s Day means to me.

As for choosing the colors, I chose Orange for the Protestant Irish, Green for the Catholic Irish, and White for the peace between them. Whatever colors you decide to use, make sure you choose them in the right order. Start by picking the color in the center of the shamrocks, then a white for the background, then a contrast or darker print for the cornerstones and final border.

Assembly is nearly the same as the steps involved in the Valentine’s Day Quilt Pattern, so take a look at that video and post for some help. Of course, you can always send me an email if you have questions.

I hope you like my pattern – Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I designed this pattern a few years ago, and I really like it. It’s simple and fun to make – you can probably make it with fabrics you have laying around. It’s also easy to customize and personalize. I think it makes a nice anniversary present too.

Download the “Mosaic Hearts” free quilt pattern (PDF).

Here’s a short video of me assembling the quilt:

(Please open the article to see the flash file or player.)

Fabric Requirements:

1 dozen piglets (9″ by 22″)

2 1/4 yards from selvage to selvage

Craft size batting

Thread to blend with quilt top

3/4 yard for backing

1/4 yard for binding

1/4 yard for border

1/8 yard for accent strip from selvage to selvage

Sample Quilts:

Some Tips:

Color selection is one of the hardest things about this pattern. Make sure you take your time before choosing them. Take a look at some close-ups of the fabric I used in the video.

This is a great pattern for beginning quilters – I’ve taught it in many of my beginner’s quilting classes.

You can add some pizazz by appliquéing photos to the inside of the hearts, or in the corners.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions.
