Quilting Tips: Making The Y-Seam Easy

In addition to making custom quilts and t-shirt quilts, I also teach a few quilting classes here and there. Based on that experience, I can say that many quilters have difficulty with making the y-seam. I’ve created a short video showing me completing a y-seam, and I’ve also written a short tutorial (download the y-seam tutorial pdf).

If you feel intimidated by the Y-seam, I hope this helps!

I have the printed directions to make Y seams. States sew 5 stitches and sew back 3…. What length of stitch do you use?

I am trying to learn to make the seam.

    Thank you.

I usually use a 2.5. If you have a more modern sewing machine, a 2.5 will work best. Otherwise, a 3 is probably your best bet.
